Filipino Traditional Attire

Honoring Our Heritage

One of our most meaningful business lines is the creation and distribution of embroidered Filipino traditional outfits. This offering is deeply personal to us—an homage to the Filipino heritage of our founders and a response to the growing need for high‑quality, beautifully crafted barongs and ternos within the Filipino American community. As more families celebrate weddings, debuts, graduations, and cultural events outside the Philippines, access to authentic, well‑made traditional wear has become increasingly important. We’re proud to help fill that gap by offering garments that honor tradition while meeting modern expectations of quality, comfort, and craftsmanship.

What is the Barong Tagalog?

The Barong Tagalog is the Philippines’ iconic formal wear—worn during life’s most important milestones. Its roots trace back to the baro, a simple collarless tunic worn before Spanish colonization. Traditionally made from natural fibers and worn untucked, the barong was designed to keep the wearer cool in the Philippines’ warm, tropical climate.

During the Spanish era, native Filipinos were required to wear sheer fabrics so they could be easily identified and prevented from concealing weapons. But in true Filipino fashion, what began as an imposed garment evolved into a symbol of artistry and resilience. Filipinos transformed the barong into a masterpiece—using fine fibers like piña (pineapple) and jusi, and embellishing them with intricate, hand‑stitched embroidery.

This embroidery, done using hoops called bastidor, became a cherished craft passed down through generations. Today, the barong stands not only as formal attire but as a cultural emblem worn with pride.

Traditional Outfits for Women

Filipino women’s traditional wear has its own rich evolution. It began with the baro’t saya—a blouse and skirt ensemble with simple sleeves and an alampay (shawl). Over time, artisans began using more luxurious fabrics such as piña and jusi, elevating the outfit into something truly elegant.

In the early 20th century, the iconic butterfly sleeves emerged, transforming the two‑piece ensemble into the terno—a gown known for its sculptural silhouette and graceful presence. Modern ternos often feature a blend of embroidery and beadwork, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship Filipino artisans are known for.

Filipino Traditional Wear in Modern Times

The global spotlight returned to the terno in 2015 when Pia Wurtzbach won the Miss Universe crown wearing a modern interpretation of the gown. Since then, Filipino traditional wear has experienced a resurgence—not just in formal settings, but in contemporary fashion as well.

Designers now create modern barongs and ternos that can be worn to work, social gatherings, cultural celebrations, and community events. These pieces blend heritage with everyday wearability, allowing Filipino-Americans to express cultural pride in fresh, stylish ways.
